What’s going to feature in our festive feast?!
It’s Chriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiistmaaaaaaaaaaaaasssssssssssss! Well, nearly. The team at Otter Vale have been working flat out over the last few weeks and we’d like to say a huge thank you to Denise, Di and Mark for all their hard work, and maintaining a sense of humour when the chips were down.
We couldn’t do what we do without our incredible local suppliers, particularly those who supply us with our fresh produce. This year in particular, our Piccalilli has been hugely popular close to home and much further afield, and it’s been challenging given the amount of prep it takes. I think Denise and Di would happily not see another cauliflower for a few months! Truly a labour of love, but we’ve had so many “wow” comments from connoisseurs and customers, backing up its Great Taste Gold award from 2006 and Taste of the West Highly Commended 2015. We’re very proud, because this is one of Granny Otter Vale’s recipes, and we think she’s great – and far too modest.
Which brings us back to our customers, longstanding and those who’ve recently discovered us. Thank you for all your support, feedback and company over the last year. Winning awards is all very well and good, but our best reward is truly when we meet you at shows, tastings, or on the phone and find out how you found us and how you’ve been enjoying what we make. As we approach our 40th year of Devon Chutney/Onion & Pineapple, these stories take on even more significance to us, in this small family business, with its third generation in food, and the fourth generation showing encouraging signs of an appetite for it! We’ll tell you more about the celebrations we’ve got planned and the charities we’ll be supporting in 2019 in due course, but for now, we’ll say thank you again and let’s focus on festive fayre!
Surprisingly popular all year round, but understandably even more so at this time of the year, is Granny Otter Vale’s Cranberry & Port Jelly, winner of a Taste of the West Gold award in 2015. It’s an obvious accompaniment to a Christmas turkey if that’s on your table, however, it is great to spread on a chunk of bread on Boxing Day for your turkey sandwich on the go! Another suggestion to help use up any cold chicken or turkey in an interesting way is Granny Otter Vale’s (she’s good, isn’t she?!) Coronation Sauce. This curried apricot concentrated sauce can be mixed to taste with mayo to make up the sauce for the classic cold dish, Coronation Chicken. It’s another award winner, having picked up a Taste of the West Gold award in 2015. And as you’ve added the mayo, if anyone asks, “Did you make this yourself?”, you can say yes I did – we won’t tell! Alternatively, you can also use the sauce as a spread to spice up a cold chicken or turkey sandwich.
We’re huge cheese fans in the Otter Vale family, so our Pear & Ginger Chutney, which won a Taste of the West Bronze award in 2008, is a must to accompany a Stilton or your blue cheese of choice. Other regional blue cheeses which we recommend include Dorset Blue Vinny and Cornish Blue. If we’ve got to choose just one of our products to sit on our cheeseboard, it would have to be Granny’s Date & Fig Relish. We launched this in December 2014, and were delighted when it won a Taste of the West Silver award 2015. Opening a new jar just SMELLS like Christmas!
If pushed for personal favourites and strictly limited to one all-rounder, this is where the family varies. Mr. Otter Vale will have his personal jar of Devon Fire to accompany his mature cheddar, whilst Granny & Grandpa will opt for Devon Chutney and Mrs. Otter Vale will choose Date & Fig. Or Pear & Ginger. Or Cranberry & Red Onion Relish. Depends on the cheese! And at the end of the day, it’s all down to personal taste.
Regardless of where you are, what you’re celebrating or how you’re celebrating; Merry Christmas/Season’s Greetings and all best wishes for the new year from the Otter Vale family to you and yours.
